Boaters expecting more slips at the Deep River marina next year have had their hopes sunk.
A split decision at the council table last week means a proposal to add 24 new slips added to the facility will be postponed until at least 2027.
As reported in last week’s NRT, a staff recommendation called for pre-budget approval to spend $285,000 on a marina dock expansion project.
The seasonal slips at the marina are consistently at full capacity, with a current waitlist of 89 boaters.
The expansion would have provided an additional 24 additional slips, each measuring 16-feet long, located outside the existing break wall at the marina.
But Mayor Sue D’Eon was the first to pour cold water on the proposal when it came up for the discussion at the council table, arguing the money would be better spent instead on roads “which are more beneficial to people in the community than docks.”
D’Eon said the town is still paying off the $500,000 it spent for the marina upgrades 10 years ago, and already committed $207,000 earlier this year for the final phase of the marina’s dock replacement.
“I just can’t in good conscience add that to the taxpayers of our municipality,” she said of the proposed expansion…
