It came down to a split decision, but town council will be granting Summerfest $15,000 this year after all.
The town had set aside that much money for the popular festival in its draft 2024 budget, but some members of council wanted to see that number reduced to $10,000, despite a letter from Summerfest organizers citing the benefits a $15,000 donation would bring to the municipality.
“Deep River Summerfest is asking the town for a financial contribution of $15,000. Official sponsorship shows continued support for our local talent and contributes to a festival that has helped provide economic growth over the past 33 years,” Summerfest chair Kelly Brown stated in the letter to council.
“In return for your generosity, we will offer publicity for the town of Deep River before, throughout and after the festival…
“We plan for our relationship to be mutually beneficial, so if there are any other ways Deep River Summerfest can continue to support your initiatives, we would be more than happy to discuss.”
Councillor Will Fitton, however, suggested the $15,000 donation be pared down to $10,000, citing the budget deliberations which were taking place at the same time…
