Deep River will be hiring a crossing guard to allay safety concerns at one of the busiest intersections in the downtown core.
The decision to do so was made at last week’s meeting of town council, and comes after a deputation to council on October 23 by Lisa Worobec.
Worobec expressed concerns about the “courtesy crossing” at Hillcrest Avenue and Deep River Road, after she and her young son were nearly hit by a car while crossing there one morning enroute to his pre-school care at Mackenzie Community School (MCS).
“We had a near-miss,” Worobec told council.
“I’m wondering what we can do to make it a little safer to get kids to school.”
Worobec went on to put forward a few suggestions to council, including having the town encourage active transportation to school in order to lessen the number of vehicles on the road, as well as having a crossing guard at the intersection.
The courtesy crossing, which is not legally enforceable by police, was created by council some 10 years ago at the time schools were consolidated at Mackenzie Community School (MCS)…
