Mackenzie holds first in-person graduation in three years
You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone, so make the most of what life has to offer every day.
That was the theme of several speakers as this year’s graduating students of Mackenzie Community School gathered with friends and family last week for the first in-person high school graduation ceremony in three years.
A total of 58 students received their Ontario Secondary School Diplomas this year, with future plans ranging from entering the workforce in Alberta, to taking a gap year before going to college for photography, to studying architechtural engineering at the University of Waterloo.
Trustee Marjorie Adam said the words “tempus fugit – carpe diem” (“time flies – seize the day”) have been said in the original Latin for the last couple of thousand years “because it has been poignantly true for every new generation.”
But for the Class of 2022, those words mean even more because of the years of high school lost to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Reflecting on the saying “whatever doesn’t kill us makes us stronger,” Adam said the past few years have been an “unwelcome opportunity to grow stronger.”
“Now you can start to use that strength, as you are graduating into a shrinking world where we are all affected by challenges everywhere,” she said…
