Deep River council will be hearing a pitch for power.
Simon Rowland, chief executive officer of Renewable Power Partners, will make a presentation to council tonight on that company’s proposal to build what it calls a relatively small battery energy storage project at a property in the east end of town off Balmer Bay Road.
The company is proposing the project under the Independent Electrical System Operator’s (IESO) second long-term request for proposals to secure new supplies of electricity for Ontario’s power grid.
The IESO is the province’s electricity system operator and planner, and it released a report earlier this year warning that annual demand for electricity in Ontario will grow by 75 percent by 2050.
“Ontario will outgrow the electricity system if expansion efforts are not accelerated,” the IESO states in a guide to municipalities regarding their role in the request for proposals.
“Alongside planning new transmission lines and investing in energy efficiency, a key pillar of our strategy is the procurement of new electricity-generating resources.”
According to its website, Renewable Power Partners has partnered with over 240 rural and commercial property owners to produce “sustainable energy projects” in over 45 municipalities both here in Canada and the United States.
The company has primarily focused on developing solar and energy storage projects in Ontario and New York State, obtaining regulatory approvals to subsequently finance, construct, own and operate solar and battery projects.
“Every renewable power project starts with thinking about the community it powers and establishing a social license to operate.
