Like people across Canada and around the world, local residents have watched in dismay and horror over the past two weeks as Russian forces launched a devastating invasion of Ukraine.
Last Friday night, about 150 people turned out at a rally at Deep River town hall to show their support, not just for those in Ukraine itself or those fleeing the war to neighbouring countries, but for members of the local community whose families and friends are in the line of fire.
Organizer Alison McIvor thanked those who came out “to stand in the snow, to send a message of love and support to your neighbours and the brave people of Ukraine.”
Reeve Glenn Doncaster spoke on behalf of the town of Deep River and Mayor Sue D’Eon, who was out of town at the time of the event.
“I hope, to our Ukrainian neighbours and friends that call North Renfrew home, that this evening’s rally will demonstrate to you that you are not alone,” he said….
