CNSC staff stand by NSDF report

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has provided updated “guidance” on hearings set to begin next Monday on a proposed radioactive waste site at the Chalk River Laboratories.

The CNSC has scheduled five days of public hearings on the Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF).

The hearings will begin Monday, May 30 at 9 am at the Best Western Inn and Conference Centre in Pembroke.

More than 70 delegations are scheduled to make presentations to the commission members, as well as updated presentations from staff at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and the CNSC.

In a late “supplemental” filing dated May 20, CNSC staff say they stand by their conclusions.

The report says staff looked at the three main topics raised by groups opposed to the project, namely environmental protection, Indigenous consultation and “long-term safety.”

“CNSC staff confirm that their conclusions remain as stated in (their original report), that the proposed NSDF project is protective of people and the environment and that the NSDF project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects, taking into account the implementation of proposed mitigation and follow-up monitoring program measures”…
