CNL, union reach deal

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and the union representing 800 of its scientists and engineers have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract, bringing to an end a week-long strike at the Chalk River labs.

CNL and the bargaining team for the Chalk River Professional Employees Group (CRPEG) reached the tentative deal Friday.

The union said it would share details of the proposed agreement with its members “shortly” and bring it to a ratification vote “as soon as possible.”

No further information was available before the NRT went to press.

CRPEG members voted to reject CNL’s previous offer in a three-day vote that ended Thursday, June 19.

Strike action resumed last Monday, including picket lines on Plant Road that backed up traffic in both directions on Highway 17.

“Our members have spoken clearly through this democratic process,” CRPEG president Jonathan Fitzpatrick said following the membership vote.

“We respect their decision and will continue working toward an agreement that properly recognizes the professional value of our nuclear scientists and engineers.”

CRPEG began negotiations with CNL in late 2023 but reached an “impasse” in talks earlier this year…
