Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd will break ground Friday morning on “one of the largest nuclear research facilities ever constructed in Canada.”

Parliamentary Secretary MP Jenna Sudds and the Chief Science Advisor of Canada, Dr. Mona Nemer will join both CNL and AECL leadership to celebrate the start of construction of the new complex.

The Advanced Nuclear Materials Research Centre (ANMRC) will contain 23 labs over 135,400 sq ft to enable “world-class research in nuclear energy public health, environmental stewardship, and global security.”

The new centre will also include 12 hot cells to conduct post-irradiation examination of small modular reactor and next-generation nuclear fuels, 42 manipulators, and glovebox facilities to support the development of advanced fuel fabrication concepts.

“The Advanced Nuclear Materials Research Centre (ANMRC) is not only the cornerstone of the government of Canada’s $1.2 billion investment in the site revitalization of the Chalk River Laboratories, it’s the future facility for Canada’s world-class research of next generation nuclear technologies,” CNL said in a media advisory.

“In addition to its role in advancing next generation nuclear technologies to support Canada’s climate action plans, the 10,000 square metre ANMRC will be critical to the life extension and long-term reliability of existing reactors, including Canada’s fleet of CANDU reactors and other designs deployed around the world.

“It will also support the national nuclear laboratory’s other research priorities – public health, environmental stewardship and global security.”

In addition to MP Sudds and Dr. Nemer, those taking part in the ground-breaking ceremony will include CNL president and CEO Joe McBrearty, Amy Gottschling, vice-president of Science & Technology and Commercial Oversight for AECL, and local municipal officials.
