The town of Deep River has postponed its Canada Day fireworks.
A new date for the show has not been set.
In a notice posted Friday, the town said the reason to postpone the fireworks scheduled for Saturday night is the poor air quality over the past several weeks, “combined with the high potential for continued air quality issues from the forest fires that are still burning in Ontario and Quebec.”
“The town would also request that under the current circumstance that residents also refrain from setting off any fireworks.”
The town noted that a “significant portion” of the cost for the July 1 celebration is provided through the Deep River Community Association’s (DRCA) application to Heritage Canada’s “Celebrate Canada” program grant.
“Strict rules are provided on reasons for cancellation or postponement under this program. DRCA have recently confirmed that the current significant air quality situation is one of the reasons that qualifies for postponement.”
The town said staff “have been monitoring and will continue to monitor” air quality and fire risk.
“An alternate date will be advertised once there is a clear indication that the air quality concerns have passed.”
Canada Day activities planned for the Deep River arena, including the annual “Red & White Parade” at noon, will go ahead as planned.
