Avon Rd project on hold

The developer behind a proposed nine-unit dwelling on Avon Road in Deep River is asking the town to put the project on hold.

In a letter to council dated December 11, Neil Milton, president of Bygda Builders, says he wants to put the project on hold while he pursues another development.

“As someone with long and deep connections to Deep River, I wish to discuss the merits and necessity of the project with my neighbours – especially those on Cabot and Highland – before the matter is considered by council,” Milton says in his letter.

Milton says he spent “much of the pandemic in town looking after my father and I realized that Deep River has a severe shortage of certain types of housing.”

“This shortage has arisen because of decades without adequate construction of multi-family rental accommodation, and it will likely reach an acute state when the addition to the hospital is completed.

“For the town to thrive (and for the benefit of both workers and clients at the long-term care), I decided to try to assist.

“This is not a profit-driven exercise, but it is about community building, and to that end, I wish to pause re-zoning of this Avon lot temporarily,” he says.

“In the meantime, I have another similar project underway which I will prioritize.”

Milton bought the Avon property from the town in 2023 after council declared it “surplus” the previous year…
