Deep River and area residents are being invited to show their support for victims of the Russian invasion of Ukraine at a peace rally at Deep River town hall Friday night at 7 pm.

Organizer Alison McIvor said she is hoping for a strong turnout.

“Russia launched a full scale attack against Ukraine last week, targeting civilian as well as military targets. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians have fled their homes, trying to find refuge from the missiles raining down on their country,” McIvor said.

“Thousands more ordinary Ukrainians have taken up arms to repel the Russian assault. Around the world, leaders and citizens have condemned this deplorable invasion.

“To show support for our Ukrainian friends and neighbours, and to stand up for peace, we are holding a rally at the town hall in Deep River on Friday, March 4 from 7 to 8 pm. Please join us in wearing blue and yellow as we stand up for Ukraine; stand up for peace.

“Even if you aren’t able to attend, please wear blue and yellow on Friday.”

For those who wish to donate, the federal government has announced that it will match donations made by individual Canadians to the Canadian Red Cross between February 24 and March 18, 2022, up to a maximum of $10 million.
