A second First Nations community is calling on the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission to delay hearings on a proposed low-level radioactive waste site at the Chalk River labs for at least a year.
The CNSC is set to hold public hearings on the Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF) beginning May 31.
Last Monday, April 11 was the deadline for public comment on the project.
By this Monday, however, only one submission appears on the CNSC website, a letter from the Mitchikanibikok Inik community, also known as the Algonquins of Barriere Lake.
Chief Tony Wawatie says his community is “extremely concerned about the proposed project’s potential impacts to our lands, waterways, rights, and way of life.”
“We do not consent to the project, which, if built, would violate both our sovereignty and our laws”….
