AECL stands by NSDF at Chalk River

Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd says it is not backing away from the Near Surface Disposal Facility.

But it may be forced to look at alternatives if the NSDF cannot move forward.

That was the message from the company Monday in response to a story in last week’s NRT.

As reported, AECL refers to the NSDF several times in its new five-year corporate plan summary as a “criticial” or “key project” in decommissioning and waste management efforts at Chalk River.

But it says delays in the construction of the NSDF are causing “a significant impact to the planned scope of work at Chalk River and other AECL sites both from a cost and schedule perspective.”

“Depending on the outcome of the (ongoing) judicial review proceedings, a broad-based (operations, legal, Indigenous relations, finance) analysis of options for moving forward may be required.”

But in a statement Monday from senior communications advisor Monette Gauvreau, AECL says it is “not reconsidering the NSDF project, nor is it currently evaluating alternative waste management solutions in place of the NSDF.”

“The project remains a critical component of AECL’s environmental remediation and waste management strategy, and a key enabler to the continued revitalization of the Chalk River Laboratories campus”…
