Ontario voters will go to the polls June 2 to elect a new provincial government, but for those who want to cast their ballot early, advance polls will continue throughout the May long weekend.

In the local area, advance polls will be open at the Deep River town hall Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Hours are from 10 am to 8 pm each day.

To cast your ballot, bring your voter information card and one piece of ID with your name on it. Acceptable ID includes anything from a Canadian passport to your health card, student ID, or a credit or debit card.

If you do not have a voter information card, you will need one piece of ID with your name and address on it. Acceptable forms of ID include any document issued by the federal or provincial government, a municipal tax bill, hydro or gas bill, Ontario driver’s licence or vehicle ownership.

For a complete list of ID requirements, visit the Elections Ontario page here.

There are seven candidates on the ballot for the riding of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke. Long-time Conservative MPP John Yakabuski is facing off against New Democrat Kurt Stoll, Oliver Jacob of the Ontario Liberals, and Anna Dolan of the Green Party of Ontario.

Also registered as candidates in the riding are Ontario Party candidate Kade MacWilliams, Thomas O’Connor of the “New Blue” party, and Murray Reid of the Confederation of Regions Party.

Yakabuski was first elected as MPP for the riding in 2003, winning a close race over then-Liberal candidate Derek Nighbor.

He has won four more elections since then, never receiving less than 60 per cent of the vote.

In 2018, Yakabuski finished first in a field of six candidates with 33,350 votes, or 69.19 per cent of the ballots cast.

NDP candidate Ethel Lavalley ran second with 8,066 votes, or 16.73 per cent.

Liberal Jackie Agnew was third with 4,701 votes, or 9.75 per cent.
