The first cadre of volunteer firefighters in Deep River should be ready for action by the beginning of February.
The nine volunteers have been training in earnest since last fall, and that training is expected to be wrapped up by the end of this month, according to Fire Chief Gary McRae.
The volunteers bring with them a wide range of backgrounds and skill-sets.
One, for example, is a paramedic, another a security guard and others are public works employees with the town.
“We have a good variety,” says McRae, adding that the volunteer firefighters all live locally in either Deep River or Laurentian Hills.
“That’s our target, to have local people so we can get that quick response.”
The fire chief went on to note that all the volunteers have been “very engaged” over the course of their training.
“Their commitment level is high and welcome to see,” he said.
