Two charged with drug impaired driving

On Saturday, July 10, at approximately 9 pm, members of the Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a possible impaired driver on Highway 17 in Laurentian Hills.

Officers located the driver and as part of the investigation a Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST) was conducted.

As a result of this investigation Yat Fung Kwong, age 33 of Ottawa, has been charged with the following Criminal Code (CC) offence:

• Operation of a motor vehicle while impaired – drugs.

The accused was released with a court date on August 10, 2021 at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke.

On Wednesday, July 14, at approximately 3:45 am, members of the Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) detachment responded to a report of a vehicle in the ditch on Highway 17 near Petawawa. The driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, was not injured.

A Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST) was conducted as part of the investigation. The driver was taken into custody and transported to the detachment for further testing by a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) officer. Police also seized a quantity of drugs.

As a result of this investigation Shawn Daniel Gervais, age 38 of Thorne, Ontario, has been charged with the following Criminal Code (CC), Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) and Highway Traffic Act (HTA) offences:

  • Operation of a motor vehicle while impaired – drugs
  • Possession of a schedule I substance – methamphetamine
  • Fail to comply with probation order
  • Driving while under suspension.

The accused had their driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days. The accused was held for a bail hearing and remains in custody until their next appearance at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on July 15, 2021.
