Renfrew County will provide pay increases based on inflation and boost vacation days in an attempt to “retain and attract top talent.”
County council approved the new policies at its regular August meeting.
In a report written for the county’s finance committee, director of corporate services Jeff Foss noted that non-union salaries at the county have been based “for many years” on the budget guidelines provided by county council.
In 2022 and ‘23, for example, salaries were increased 1.75 and 2.0 per cent.
Ontario’s inflation rate for the last six months of the year, meanwhile, was 4.42 per cent in 2021 and 6.43 per cent in 2022.
What that means, Foss said, is that the county is falling behind on wages when compared to its major competitors for municipal staff.
Foss said the labour market is “dynamic and very competitive, and other public organizations are trying to recruit and retain the same pool of talent currently employed by the County of Renfrew.”
