The weather forecast is calling for a late afternoon shower, but that isn’t likely to dampen spirits as residents of Deep River, Laurentian Hills and Head, Clara, Maria get ready to celebrate Canada’s 152nd birthday Monday.
The day kicks off with children’s games and activities hosted by Branch 562 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Chalk River, including visits from the Laurentian Hills fire department and OPP auxiliary.
There will be hot dogs, cake and ice cream, along with surprises and prizes. Activities take place from 10 am to 12 pm.
A 4-hand euchre tournament will be held at the branch beginning at 12 pm.
In Deep River, celebrations will kick off at 11:45 am with the annual Rotary “Red & White” Parade. Everyone is invited to dress in their best Canada Day colours and join the parade from the Deep River town hall parking lot down to the campus.
The mayor’s welcome will take place after the parade, followed by an African drumming demonstration at the waterfront at 12:30 pm, and then a full afternoon of fun and activities from 1-4 pm, including inflatable games, bouncers, a giant slip and slide, fire displays, pony rides, and a performance by Monkey Rock Music at 2 pm.
The afternoon activities also include inner tube water polo at 2 pm at Lamure Beach and an hour of free kayak and paddle board trials at the beach from 3-4 pm.
The Deep River Legion will also be open for Canada Day festivities, with live music beginning at 2 pm and hamburgers and sausages available from 3-6 pm.
Evening events include a live DJ providing music at the campus from 7 pm on, and of course the day’s finale fireworks show at dusk (approx. 9:45 pm).
In Head, Clara, Maria, residents can also enjoy fireworks at Old Mackeys Park on Jennings Road beginning at about 9:45 pm as well.
Whether you join in the fun, or celebrate quietly with family and friends, have a safe and happy Canada Day holiday!
