Canada Day fire call on Highway 17

Laurentian Hills firefighters were on the scene of a Canada Day callout Thursday evening.

Firefighters were dispatched at about 6:35 pm to a report of a hydro pole on fire beside Highway 17, just west of King’s Road.

No flames were visible when firefighters reached the scene, but smoke continued to rise from a smouldering box on the pole.

A sizeable patch of grass at the foot of the pole was also burnt. Luckily due to the recent rainfall, the fire did not spread further into the grass or nearby woods.

Firefighters remained on scene until Hydro One could respond to cut power to the pole to allow the remains of the blaze to be properly doused.
