60 Years Ago: “Dig this”

APRIL 19, 1961: At the Home and School Association meeting April 14, Mr WKF Kendrick, principal of Ottawa Teachers College, spoke on “The Problems Involved in the Teaching of English.” He said that we are failing to create the love of language in the youth of today. Students feel that teenage language is far more expressive, although not necessarily understood by adults. To become and remain “one of the gang,” the employment of such phrases as “dig this” and “he’s a square,” etc appear to be necessary.
