50 years ago: Teachers vote to keep strap

APRIL 29, 1970: The teachers of Renfrew County’s elementary schools would like to see the strap retained. Of 362 teachers who replied to a questionnaire sent out by the board of education, 322 were in favour of corporal punishment. About half thought that the strap should not be used in the primary grades; spanking seemed to be the preferred punishment for the little ones.
